4 Ways To Make Sure You Reach Your Goals

By Mitchell Sahlfeld

Achieving your goals is tough work. You need to be able to push through the toughest of times, while still keeping your head. Here are 4 ways to keep it up.

1. When Exciting Times Come, Use It All Up

When I first started lifting weights, almost every day I was able to see a jump in numbers. I was either able to do more weight, more reps, more sets, or get through the workout faster. It was like my body was just now learning how to use its own ability to produce force.

These are called "newbie-gains." Since the body is relatively uncoordinated and not use to the stimulus of lifting, then it adapts fairly quickly to what is going on. Fast forward to where I am now, after 9 yrs of lifting experience.

The days where my body is able to make rapid adaptations are few and far between. What used to occur every ten days now occurs every thousand. My body is so used to the stimulus that instead of just picking up a barbell like I only used to have to do, I now have to build an entire program around lifting in which I have a peak, usually a few times per year.

When those days do come, I use them for everything they are worth. If I'm feeling great on a particular day, I use up every ounce of energy I can. Why? Because you never know what will happen next. You may never get a chance to shoot towards that goal again. If it's there for the taking, then take it.

Setting your goals is the most fun part of the journey. You are energized, ready to go. With your map in one hand and your walking stick in the other, you scan the horizon, imagining the possibilities.

Use your energy. When you set upon that direction, sprint towards it, use that excitement you have at the ready, feeling almost limitless. But know that it is not limitless. No matter how much you try it will begin to run out. So put it to good use but be prepared for the next part.

2. When Tough Times Come, Keep Your Reasons Close

Goal achievement is kind of like running a race. Before the race, you are nervous, excited. Putting your feet in the blocks, you can barely contain your want to explode from your crouched position, ready to move like the wind.

The gun is blown and everyone takes off, anxious to make themselves known in the first several strides. As soon as that initial excitement wears off, though, you become business-like. You have a plan you need to keep; a pace you need to follow. This is where the race is made. This is what counts most; your ability to remain strong on that pace.

The movement towards achieving your goals will have this period. This is the period where passion dwindles, where excitement fades, and where doubt arises. You become business-like, a robot showing up to do the same thing each day.

And there is not a single thing wrong with this. It has to happen in order to reach the goal. So be ready for it, and when it comes, remember those reasons that you had at the beginning. Those will be the reasons that will keep you going. They will help keep the passion you need to keep your energy up.

If they were wholesome reasons, they will stay strong throughout the process. If not, your doubt will most likely overtake them. Make sure they are wholesome.

3. Makes Your Reasons Wholesome

Sadly, many times we set out to get something, it is for superficial reasons, most likely involving money. We want a way to make easy money. We want to lose weight to pick up chicks. We do all of these things just in an effort to look better to other people.

These reasons are not sufficient enough to produce lasting changes in a person. The reasons you have need to be your reasons. They have make sense to you, they have to connect to you, and you have to care about them in a deep way.

Reasons that don't do any of these things will meet a wall with little strength. When the tough times come and doubt consumes you, the reasons will not matter much, only getting out of your current misery.

Connect yourself with the goal. Why does it matter to me? Why should I care so much about achieving it? How is my life better off with this goal achieved?

Conducting your goal setting in this fashion will allow you to see the true value of what you are going after. That true value will be the light at the end of the tunnel as you make your journey.

4. Not All Goals Are Meant To Be Reached

A goal is not always meant to be reached. It often serves simply as something to aim at. - Bruce Lee

Having the luxury of others telling us what they think we should do allows some comfort in thinking that we know the direction that we ought to take. But this is not always the case. The world tries to push and prod us in certain ways in order for us to be better off.

In some ways this is true. We are given pre-made goals in order to have somewhere to go, something to look forward to. We can't always trust ourselves to lead in the right direction. We need a coach, a teacher, a wise man. These things they tell us to strive for, we may not ever get there. Halfway along the path we might find a new one, one that fits us better. Was the other goal useless then? Not at all.

Without an initial direction we aren't really sure what path to take. It takes finding a wise, experienced person to point a finger in a good direction. It this then that we are able to find our own path.

Conclusion

Achieving your goals takes giving yourself the proper perspective. You must be able to think correctly about the upcoming trials. Unless you do that, when the trials do come, you will be mentally unprepared. You won't be able to handle them with joyous determination.

These four ways of thinking about goals will provide you with the proper mindset you need to achieve them. They will make sure that you start off on the right foot and are able to follow through with what you set out to do.
