10 Extremely Effective Ways to Get More Done

By Machen MacDonald

It is always intriguing to me how people imagine if they could just manage their time better they could be more productive. If you are going to attempt to manage your time, you might as well try your hand at managing your gravity and your weather too.

My point is you can't manage time. We can't even get time management experts to agree on what time really is.

However, you can become more proficient at managing yourself in relation to time. It's all about prioritization.

"Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least." ~ Goethe

The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities. Upon examining extremely effective people, we have found that they are masterful at managing their priorities and are realistic about the time that will pass as the project, task or action moves through to completion.

Here are TEN Valuable Practices that are habitually demonstrated by those that are exceptionally effective at getting things done on time:

1. Have a daily ritual. Select the same time each day to collect your thoughts, ponder the right questions and get yourself pointed in the right direction for working on your projects. Stay focused on accomplishing the highest priority tasks first.

2. Develop and ask yourself the right questions to know what the best investment of your time is. E.g., "Which one project or activity, if I did it in an excellent and timely fashion, would have the greatest positive consequences in my work or personal life?"

3. Have a clear and compelling vision of what successful completion of the project or task will look like and will feel like. Summon that vision throughout your day.

4. Know the hierarchy of your values. Be very clear what's important to you and your organization. Make it a habit of honoring and staying in alignment with your values.

5. Don't over commit. Be practical regarding your capacity and take on what you can actually get done in the time allowed. Learn how to say the word - no; and be ok with it.

6. Have a central list to work from. Trying to keep all or part of your projects and tasks in your head or in various locations leads to overwhelm.

7. Become proficient at asking others to help you get things done. When you notice resistance to working on various items see if someone else may be willing to help you by either assisting or taking over the task.

8. Learn to set meaningful boundaries and stick to them. People treat you the way you let them treat you.

9. Celebrate your wins and completions. Somewhere between diapers and getting our business cards printed we stopped celebrating our accomplishments. Gain back your celebratory attitude. This habit alone will supply you with more energy to get more done.

10. Let go and forget it. At the end of each day, let go and be done with it. If you didn't get accomplished all that you wanted, let it go. Emotionally hanging on to the thoughts that you should have done more won't get it done. The sooner you let go the quicker you get to recalibrate for the new day.

If you commit to incorporating these practices into each day you will develop the ability to concentrate single mindedly on your most important tasks one by one, do them well and finish them completely.

Make it up, make it fun & make it happen!
