Strengthen your Character and Achieve Your Goals

Written by Dr. Ray Angelini

The biggest problem that I encounter with my clients in goal-setting is that they are most often too focused on setting external goals such as losing weight, making more money, etc.

In my experience, the key to setting and successfully achieving your goals is shifting your focus from the external to the internal. An internal goal is one that focuses on developing or improving some aspect of yourself. To truly be successful, you must start on the inside and work your way outward.

I think that you will find that the actual process of achieving your goals will become much easier when you focus your attention on personal qualities such as becoming more responsible, direct or innovative. As you build strength from the inside out, you will invariably begin to attract people and opportunities that will help you to achieve your external goals.

Let's say your external goal is to increase your annual income by 20 percent. An internal goal that might support this external goal could be to develop your ability to be more direct with yourself and others regarding what you need and want.

Once you've chosen your internal goal, the next step is to write a positive statement related to this goal that is present-focused. Then, display this affirmation in written form in a prominent place at both your home and place of employment. Finally, commit to taking at least three actions each week to begin developing this desired quality. It is important to always remember that the most valuable asset that you possess is yourself. Any investment you make in developing yourself or strengthening your character is the surest and quickest way to achieve your goals and create a better life.

By investing in yourself, you'll find that the "how-to" of achieving your goals will flow more effortlessly and naturally. Life has a way of presenting us with lessons and challenges that are designed to spur our personal growth. By being proactive in strengthening various aspects of our personality and character, we gain greater control as to how we progress in our developmental process.

As always, the choice is ultimately up to us. Life will constantly beckon us to grow and mature. By being proactive in this process rather than reactive, we are more likely to be able to ride the crest of life's waves rather than wiping out. Enjoy the ride!
