Yesterday I was doing my weekly run and I saw this man working with a group of students at the running track. He must be a coach or something. He looks about 50, but very fit and strong. I couldn’t help wondering, if only I could be like this guy when I was in my 50s.
Then I realised that the only way I could get into a shape like him in my 50s is to do the right thing today, not tomorrow, not next week, certainly not when I’m 50 already.
Do you often imagine how wonderful it would be when your dream finally comes true? Or do you often get frustrated by thinking why your goal is taking so long?
If you do, like most of us, you are not living in the now but trying to reach your goal in the future. This sounds so obvious but we all fall for it. We cannot achieve our goal in the future, but only in the now. Whatever happens to our goal depends on only what we do now, this moment, today.
We may have plans or things we want to do for our goal, but we can only do them now, not tomorrow or next week. Because when tomorrow comes, next week turns around, they become now and today. If we can’t discipline ourselves to focus on taking action in the now, our plans or ideas will never materialise in the future.
We can only take those actions moment by moment, day by day. Any moment or day we are not working on our goal, we stop making progress. If we are not making progress, no amount of wishing or worrying will help. The only thing that WILL help is to take this moment and start doing something today.
