Using Leading & Lagging Indicators to Track Your Goals
Do you ever feel like you're working hard but only checking your progress based on the final outcome (like a number on a scale)? This week, let's change that by understanding two powerful types of metrics: Lagging and Leading indicators.
- Lagging Indicators are the results of your habits. They are easy to measure but hard to change directly. They tell you if you've achieved your goal. Examples: Weight lost, money saved, revenue earned, a test score.
- Leading Indicators are the actions that drive those results. They are predictive, within your control, and tell you if you are likely to achieve your goal. Examples: Workouts completed, calories consumed, dollars put into savings, sales calls made, hours
studied.
Your Tip: Stop just tracking the outcome and start tracking the process. While your lagging indicator is your ultimate target (e.g., "lose 20 lbs"), your leading indicators are your daily focus (e.g., "drink 64 oz of water" and "walk 10,000 steps").
Why it works: By focusing on your leading indicators, you put your energy into the things you can control today. This builds momentum, creates positive habits, and makes the journey feel more successful, even before you see the final result.
Try it this week:
- Identify one lagging indicator for your goal (the result).
- Now, list 2-3 leading indicators (the actions that will cause that result).
- Track your leading indicators diligently each day. Watch how consistent action leads to inevitable progress.
Measure your actions, and the results will follow.
